Low-cost measurement of facemask efficacy for filtering expelled droplets during speech.
As Myotherapists and health professionals we know that masks are likely going to stay around for a while. To protect all our patients and our staff we have looked further into which masks are the most appropriate and effective for treatments.
In this peer review study it show's us what masks are most effective.
In summary.... we suggest all our patients have a read for themselves and leave a comment if they have any questions!
N95 then 3-layer cotton then surgical masks are the best in descending order, neck gaiters are counterproductive as they diffuse expelled droplets!
Although we know now that wearing a mask is better than nothing at all and is illegal at the time of postiong this (yes, we know).
Still, determining mask efficacy is a complex topic that is still an active field of research (see for example, made even more complicated because the infection pathways for COVID-19 are not yet fully understood and are complicated by many factors such as the route of transmission, correct fit and usage of masks, and environmental variables.
