"It depends", with clinical reasoning why you are using tape.
There are many positives and negatives that I've found in over 5 years of treatments. –
Firstly it depends if the clinician is using Rocktape also known as kinesiology tape or rigid tape. 🙌
Working alongside the AFL, we would use rigid tape ONLY, this was due to the laws and codes associated with coloured taping believe it or not, or lack of scientific evidence. -
Rigid tape can be extremely useful in contact sports to protect the athlete and give the injury more support and protection.
Great for securing joints, and reducing ROM and movement around the joint. Also helps with the mental aspect of performance, the placebo effect with rigid and rocktape is something which should be taken very seriously with athletes and not just be used as a cash cow.
I see many therapists taping clients each appointment which is utter useless unless there is some serious acute issues shown.
Taping to me comes under the same boat as wearing an ankle brace in basketball, orthodics for your feet or a posture brace for support and wrist straps for deadlifts.
ALL of them makes the surrounding muscles WEAKER which will make the condition and injury WORSE.
If you STRENGTHEN the surrounding muscles you will no longer need to use a band-aid fix.
This is why a lot of elite athletes spend a lot of time doing strength and conditioning training and taking their rehabilitation seriously with their myotherapist or physiotherapists.
If you are needing a therapist who not only reduces your level of pain but also improves performance, strength, stability and mobility contact us today.
Would love to hear your thoughts if you've had taping? -
